Setting Priorities
The most important things in life are always the last most of us put in place for a rainy day. Don’t get caught with your pants down. If you do not have a person to take care of your medical affairs please do so before it’s too late. How many times will we have to walk around the park before we realize we’re lost? When there is no power of attorney agent or form placed in the chart, most hospitals will perform procedures that are “medically” necessary. A properly prepared durable power of attorney assures that your wishes are known and respected.
When healthcare providers know that family members care, make unannounced visits or are present over 75% of the time, it can make a world of difference to the patient and the care he receives. Please do not call the facility over the phone and make complaints about the care or staff if you do not plan to follow through or visit on a regular basis. It can have a negative effect on the patient care. If possible set times for family members to relieve one another even if it is for a couple of hours. Work around each other’s schedules. Think about how you would want to be treated? No job or anything else should come before a love one. Family members or close friends are irreplaceable!
